Join Guide Landon Lipke for a clinic aimed at the beginner or intermediate tenkara angler who wants to step it up to the next level and increase the effectiveness of an already highly effective form of fishing.
Tenkara is the Japanese art of fixed-line fly fishing. The word translates to “fishing from the skies” or “fishing from heaven” and was developed more than 400 years ago for the mountain streams of Japan.
Using ultra-portable yet delicate rods, beautifully tied flies, and a stealthy approach, Tenkara fly fishing has rapidly grown in popularity among North Carolina’s brook trout anglers. DRO’s own Landon Lipke is generally regarded as Western North Carolina’s Tenkara Expert, and he offers Tenkara fishing lessons and Tenkara fly-tying lessons through the shop.
The class size will be limited to eight people for $40 per participant. Call the shop to sign up for this class.
Personalized Tenkara lessons are available year-round, depending on Landon’s schedule. Davidson River Outfitters also offers classroom options for those who want to learn Tenkara fly-tying or try out the rods and fixed line style before hitting the river.
To learn more about Tenkara fishing trips and lessons, call 828-877-4181 or complete an online request.
DRO offers instructional programs in a variety of fly fishing disciplines. Our class options cover everything from casting and fishing techniques to fly tying and custom rod-building.
From floating the legendary trout streams of Montana to high adventure trips chasing Golden Dorado in Argentina, DRO has a fly fishing adventure for every angling appetite.
Just after the first snow of the year, the fish are slow and the temps are cold. If you plan to fish this time of year, sleep in and make a cup of coffee before heading to the river. Around 10:00 the water and the air will warm up and the fish will start feeding for the day. The fish will feed until 3:00 or 4:00 in the afternoon until the sun goes behind the trees and the air temps start to drop again. Make sure you wear layers so you can add and subtract clothes throughout the day. As always when fishing during the winter, make sure that you have a plan of where you are going and tell others where you expect to be and what time you expect to be off the water, in case something happens while you are fishing.
