Current ConditionsWe finally received some much-needed rain, and after a few days of water too high to fish safely, we are back at it and back in the swing of things. |
Nathaniel “Than” Axtell grew up in Tidewater, Virginia, chasing largemouth and stripers in the James River basin, while spending each summer plying the Cullasaja River for trout and rock bass in front of his granddad’s cabin. After graduate school at VCU, Than moved here for good 20 years ago; he and his wife are raising their two kids on Cathey's Creek. Than worked his first trip for DRO in 2001, and after stints as a guide and manager at three other regional fly shops, he is happy to return home. His writing and photographs have been published in Fly Rod & Reel, Eastern Fly Fishing, Southbound, and Fish & Fly magazines. Our resident bug nerd, Than was voted “Most Prone to Flip Rocks” by his senior class. He is a devout “char-head” who has pursued speckled trout from British Columbia to Labrador. Whether stalking brookies in the high country or floating tailwaters in his drift boat, Than strives to make every trip educational, entertaining and fun.
DRO offers instructional programs in a variety of fly fishing disciplines. Our class options cover everything from casting and fishing techniques to fly tying and custom rod-building.
From floating the legendary trout streams of Montana to high adventure trips chasing Golden Dorado in Argentina, DRO has a fly fishing adventure for every angling appetite.
Just after the first snow of the year, the fish are slow and the temps are cold. If you plan to fish this time of year, sleep in and make a cup of coffee before heading to the river. Around 10:00 the water and the air will warm up and the fish will start feeding for the day. The fish will feed until 3:00 or 4:00 in the afternoon until the sun goes behind the trees and the air temps start to drop again. Make sure you wear layers so you can add and subtract clothes throughout the day. As always when fishing during the winter, make sure that you have a plan of where you are going and tell others where you expect to be and what time you expect to be off the water, in case something happens while you are fishing.
